What is Salon Success?

Salon Success is fundamentally a distribution company; we pick, pack and ship (literally) truckloads of shampoo bottles across the UK and Europe. But hey, anyone can do that, so what makes us different? Relationships are at the heart of everything we do; we care and that’s why our logo icon is a representation of a hug: all together now, ahhhhh.

We aim to be The Distributor of Choice to our salon and distributor partners across the globe, providing a true consultancy service backed up by extensive marketing and education programmes.

We are everything that your average distributor is not: fun, friendly, professional and innovative. We connect the right people with passion, programmes, products and a truly professional promise.

A little bit of history...

Salon Success was founded in 1979 by industry maverick, Leslie Spears. With a background in retailing and the automotive industry, Leslie had his first insight into the wonderful world of hairdressing in 1974. He discovered that the majority of hairdressers were poorly paid for their work, and while they had the creative skills necessary to be successful, they lacked the business skills to be sustainable.

Leslie decided to apply his business know how to the hairdressing industry and 3·6·5 Salon Education was born at his kitchen table (not literally of course, that would be messy). After holding the first event in London in June 1982, Leslie shared the message of 3·6·5 with such prolific hairdressing groups as Headmasters who are still members to this day.

1987 bought about a massive change to Salon Success towers after a meeting between Leslie and fledgling business owners Paul Mitchell and John Paul DeJoria led to the UK launch of the Paul Mitchell® brand.

In 1998, Salon Success outgrew its home, Vine Tree House in Wendover and moved to the beauteous building that is now Salon Success HQ in Aylesbury.

In the early 2000's, Leslie sold the business to the Beauty Systems Group, further cementing our place within the professional hairdressing industry as part of the wider Sally family alongside our siblings Salon Services and Sally Express.

Simon Tickler

Managing Director

Simon has applied his knowledge and skills in many areas of the business from working with our regional and overseas distributors, setting up new ventures in Europe and Australia, to working on Marketing projects and business development, and today holds the position of Managing Director.

Simon likes to maintain a hands-on approach wherever possible, so although much of his time is taken up working on the development and strategy of the business, he can also be seen getting stuck in at our events from presenting on stage, right through to manning the shop and packing boxes.

Simon has an unwavering belief in the Paul Mitchell® brand, and lives by the philosophy ‘do what’s right’, cultivating the culture that makes Salon Success such a unique and great place to come to work. The mission statement for Salon Success is: have fun · make money · be number one, a goal that Simon helps the Company to realise. He is exceptionally passionate about the Team and takes no credit for the success of our company, instead passing praise onto the Team as a whole.

Away from the office his other full time job as father to Gracie leaves him little time for his other passion which is cricket.

Zoë Vears

Director of Publicity

Named by her colleagues as The Queen of Everything, Zoë’s role today as Director of Publicity provides her with many exciting challenges and sees her involved with all aspects of the Company. After two decades with Salon Success, she still enjoys the fact that no day is ever the same for her. Responsible for Design, Event Production, Marketing, Merchandising, PR & Digital and Promotions, her Team’s objective is to support the sales function of the Company by creating compelling tools and materials which reflect our brand values, create brand awareness and ultimately grows sales.

Well organised (this lady loves a spreadsheet!), and a passionate custodian of our Company’s persona, one of Zoë’s strengths is in looking not only at the big picture but also every minute detail. Zoë coaches our 3·6·5 members in the power of PR, and has been a guest speaker at JPMS events in the USA. Away from work, Zoë is a busy Mum to two young children Phoebe and Jude and also enjoys travel, cooking and the odd glass of bubbles!

Jason Dunn

Director of European Sales

Having entered the hairdressing industry in 1997, Jason trained as a barber and hairdresser and went on to become International Artistic Director for Toni & Guy working across their educational shows and events and backstage at London Fashion Week. Adding to his creative skills, Jason went on to work on the commercial side of the business becoming International Business Development Manager for label.m.

With strong beliefs in environmental matters and animal welfare, Jason was keen to work with a brand and within a company that share his beliefs. In 2017 we were pleased to welcome Jason on board heading up our European team and our Education strategy using his wealth of industry experience and knowledge. He is a firm believer that you should never assume and always listen and has a genuine passion for the people in the hairdressing industry.

Outside of work Jason enjoys being outdoors, swimming, going to the gym, seeing the Exeter Chiefs play rugby and spending time with his wife Nicola and young children Angus and Winona.

Canary Lord

Director of Corporate Affairs & Legal Counsel

A fully qualified solicitor and Director of Group Corporate Affairs with overall responsibility of legal, regulatory and reception, Canary joined the Company in November 2001, bringing with her five years of in-house legal experience from the capital.

Canary enjoys the variety her role brings and is very level headed in dealing with the challenges and stresses that often arise (her dry sense of humour often helps with this too!). Never to be underestimated, Canary is our silent weapon in ensuring our Company and brands are protected for the future. She is a strong believer in “Doing what you should and not what you could,” and feels the Salon Success Team embodies just that with their passion for what they do.

Outside of work Canary loves spending time with her son Tom. Along with a brilliant legal mind Canary possesses a creative and artistic side, and when she finds the time enjoys drawing and creating contemporary glass pieces for her home.

Ken West

Director of 3∙6∙5 Education

Ken entered hairdressing immediately after leaving school, training and working as a stylist at a large salon in South London. He opened his first salon over 25 years ago with great success. After experiencing difficulties in his third salon, he joined 3·6·5, wanting new ideas to thrive in today’s ‘High Street Jungle’.

Respected as a passionate member for many years, he was invited to become part of the coaching team where his knowledge of all aspects of business proved invaluable. In 2008, Ken became Director of 3·6·5 Education, where today he enjoys developing the ever evolving education programme as well as helping members with their day to day challenges.

Ken is a respected industry figure, presenting at industry events such as Salon Smart and Salon International, has a monthly column in Creative Head magazine and has been a guest speaker for JPMS in the USA.

When he needs a well earned break from the limelight Ken likes to regularly visit his pad in southern Spain to top up his tan. Ken also has a passion for driving large vehicles (strange but true!).

Emma Stallard

Director of MIES

After studying Software Engineering at Hatfield University, Em has worked within the MIS team since 1992. Her team’s role is to ensure that everyone has the IT tools to do their job effectively. Her biggest satisfaction occurs when no one needs them, as this is when they know that as a Team they are doing their job well! Today as Director of MIES, Em is responsible for the Company’s Management Information and Education Systems, as well as being involved with web development and 3∙6∙5, she owns the relationship with our special customers who have large ecommerce websites.

Calm and logical Em loves being presented with a challenge whether it is ensuring the Team has the correct IT tools to do their job, or her latest family hobby of snowboarding! Mum to two ‘young men’, Em enjoys juggling a very full life so when she does get a little ‘me time’ she enjoys walking, reading and resting!

JOHN HURINE

“I’m responsible for identifying and developing relationships with new and existing salons, working with and supporting our Salon Business Consultants on the road to provide the best service in the industry. We place a strong focus on helping salons to achieve the right volume and mix of products on the shelf using effective planograms – we know that volume retail equals volume sales and getting this right can help pay the salon rent!

“Building salon relationships is really important to me and makes my job so enjoyable. We have a very loyal client base and tailor our services to each individual salon – working together to create a profitable retail business with the brands we represent.”

ELLA HALL

“We want to offer our salon partners a choice when it comes to working with us and their guests. We strive to be our salon partners’ biggest and best business relationship, which means providing them with more than just products.

“Our Club Services team and Salon Business Consultants are always on hand to offer advice, however, even out of office hours our salons can turn to our professional website.

“With crucial information and business advice, key marketing and PR tools, free downloads and a social media kit, we have everything a salon needs to create a 360-degree marketing campaign for each of the 20 professional-only hair and beauty brands within our portfolio.”

ERICA WHITE

Promotions Manager

“We call our office The Wonder Room, it’s where gift-wrapping and kit collating becomes an art form and we ensure every promotional item, sample or gift receives fantastic attention to detail. We send care and love with each product that leaves us.

“We create raffle prizes to support the activities of our salon community, whether for a charity they are supporting or gift requests for their customers or stylists. Our creative flair holds no bounds in our happy room.”

ADRIAN WHITE

Logistics Manager

“From the Salon Success warehouse we endeavour to maintain a personal service for our salons. As a business we understand the importance for salons to have the products available for their clients, often at very short notice, especially for their colour clients.

“Provided the order reaches our Distribution Centre by 2.30pm, we always aim for a next day delivery service. In extremely urgent cases we will break the system, often dispatching an order just as the delivery truck is about to depart! The customer is always our number one focus – they can count on Salon Success to provide exactly what they need, when they need it!”

CHRIS WELLS

Show & Events Production Manager

“At Salon Success we try to cover everything and I believe with our extensive range of training and shows we can help our salons take their business to another level. It’s not only about learning a new haircut or colouring technique, we want our stylists to take what they learn back to their team and grow their column business. We like to think of it as LUST: Learn it, Use it, Share it, Teach it!

“We love to take our education expertise on the road and offer regional education ranging from all-singing-and-dancing hands-on events to small intimate classes for eight to 10 people. If our salon owners would prefer education delivered in salon, we also offer that with a range of cutting and colour formats with our education team. I truly believe this is why we are the distributor of choice.”

GEMMA AMURA

Regional Technical Consultant

“We are an education-driven team creating bespoke education plans to drive salon businesses forward. I firmly believe that educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. It takes passion, knowledge and a genuine desire to care for a business like it’s your own, to not only succeed but to make a difference. We bring out the passion, talent and enthusiasm a stylist needs to excel in today's hairdressing world – we have the knowledge and techniques to share but more importantly we have the desire to embrace every hairdresser and support their individual growth within the business.

“The reason I went into education was to make other stylists feel comfortable and inspired in their individual training plans. I always aim to be informal yet professional and informative! I love my career and wish to inspire as many as possible in theirs.”
